The National Nutrition Policy of Malaysia was formulated and approved by the cabinet in 2003 as outlined in the National Plan of Action for Nutrition of Malaysia (NPANM I), 1996-2000. This policy aims to strengthen efforts to combat the problem of malnutrition and chronic diseases related to nutrition. It outlines the direction for the development and implementation of all nutritional and related activities in the country.

Basic Statement
National Nutrition Policy of Malaysia strives to ensure the well-being of the population is achieved and maintained through nutrition. This policy aims to ensure that all walks of life have an adequate supply of food, safe and quality food. It encourages and supports strategies for healthy eating practices. This policy will also integrate and mobilize the efforts of stakeholders in the planning, implementation and appearance of effective and sustainable food and nutrition programs.

Policy Goals

National Nutrition Policy of Malaysia aims to ensure that the well-being of the people is achieved and maintained through nutrition to enable them to contribute effectively towards the development of the country, in line with Vision 2020.

Basic Objectives

  1. Improving and maintaining the well-being of all residents through nutrition.
  2. Ensuring a secure supply of food for all walks of life.
  3. Strengthen the relationship between the sectors involved in the development and implementation of all nutritional and related activities in the country.

Implementation Mechanism
The implementation of the National Nutrition Policy of Malaysia is under the jurisdiction of the National Food and Nutrition Safety Council (MKMPK) chaired by the Minister of Health. It is mobilized, monitored and evaluated by the National Coordinating Committee for Food and Nutrition (NCCFN) through the National Plan of Action for Nutrition of Malaysia (NPANM).

This policy is in the process of being reviewed to be in line with the National Plan of Action for Nutrition of Malaysia (NPANM) III, 2016-2025 as well as current needs, directions and latest nutrition-related policies that have been formulated from within and outside the country.
